To be honest: most frames want to have their say. Not Liesl. 20 mm wide, 25 mm high, a narrow rib that slopes slightly at the top and tapers inwards to a fine groove at the edge of the fold. At its core, this is a moulding shape of the sort required by classical modernism for works on paper and small formats: straight, flat, without a groove profile that draws the eye inwards. The frame defines the space; it does not stage it. It is the surface that is interesting. Champagne gold, brushed, with very fine longitudinal grooves – and beneath this, a warm rose-red glimmers through, so that the light gold appears at times silvery and cool, at other times almost peach-coloured, depending on the light. Two-tone, but without any gimmicks. The wood is solid; the grain runs through the cross-section, whilst the rebate edge reveals it in its raw state. We recommend Liesl for contemporary works: abstract colour fields, graphic prints, and even photography with a light background. It looks its best in our setting when the image itself has a sense of calm – a very dark, dramatic motif would visually overwhelm this delicate moulding. But that is, after all, its purpose: to remain unobtrusive.
