Immersed in the fascinating world of Flemish art, we dive into the biography of the outstanding artist Thomas de Keyser, who made a name for himself in the Netherlands between 1596 and 1667. In his time he enjoyed the reputation of the most sought-after portrait painter, until a certain Rembrandt outshone his star in the 1630s. However, de Keyser's effect on Rembrandt was unmistakable, so strong that some of de Keyser's works were mistakenly attributed to the legendary Rembrandt. Thomas de Keyser not only inherited his artistic talent, he was also prepared for it by his background and environment. Son of the architect and sculptor Hendrik de Keyser, brother of the talented Pieter and William de Keyser, he grew up in an environment filled with art and creativity. His proximity to master painters such as Nicolaes Eliaszoon Pickenoy and Werner van den Valckert, as well as his acquaintance with the works of Pieter Lastman and Joachim von Sandrart, shaped his artistic style and development. However, it was not only brushes and paints that defined de Keyser's life. His second marriage in 1640 and the birth of five children, baptized as Remonstrants, shaped his personal life. His younger brother Willem worked with the architect Jacob van Campen on designs for the town hall before traveling to England and falling into a financial crisis. Despite his intense involvement in the petit-granite trade, which he sold to his brother Pieter, de Keyser always found time for painting. His return to art is documented in a number of works, including a depiction of Nausicaa meeting Odysseus on the beach.
Distinctive for their characterful expression and masterful technique, de Keyser's paintings can now be found in prestigious museums around the world, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Louvre in Paris, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Works such as the life-size portraits of the four Amsterdam mayors gathered to greet Marie de Medici in 1638 are highlights in an impressive collection that do justice to the artist when reproduced as fine art prints on high-quality material. The use of intense gold shimmer and Rembrandtesque chiaroscuro in his portraits is particularly evident.
