Constructivism, De Stijl   •   Theo van Doesburg @ Wikipedia

Theo van Doesburg was born as Christiaan Emil Marie Küpper in Utrecht. Later he adopted the surname of his stepfather. Actually, he wanted to be an actor, but at the age of 19 began studying painting. In addition, he earned his living with art critical work for a magazine.

During his military service in Tilburg in 1915 he came across a criticism of an exhibition by Piet Mondrian . Together, the two artists founded the magazine "De Stijl" in Leiden in 1917, from which the entire artistic movement of the same name assumed a "total abstraction". Architecture and art should be brought together, simplified geometric elements become their new language. Van Doesburg said, "What the cross represents for the early Christians represents the square for us, the square will conquer the cross." However, the collaboration of van Doesburg and Mondrian on "De Stijl" later broke down on the question of whether the use of diagonals in abstract paintings was allowed. While Van Doesburg advocated that, Mondrian was against it.

Van Doesburg was fascinated by Dadaism. In 1922 he founded the Dada magazine Mécano and moved to Weimar, where he temporarily taught as a private lecturer under Walter Gropius at the Bauhaus. With Kurt Schwitters he went on a Dada tour through the Netherlands. The poster for the "Little Dada Soirée" is an optical cacophony of slogans in different languages ??over each other, which contradict each other in a typical Dada way: "Dada is against the future, Dada is dead, Dada is idiotic, Long live Dada!"

Van Doesburg fell ill at the beginning of 1931 and moved to Davos in Switzerland, where he died of a heart attack a few weeks later. © Meisterdrucke
