Constructivism, De Stijl

A journal gave the movement its name. De Stijl, published from 1917 in the Dutch town of Leiden by Theo van Doesburg, understood design as a task reaching far beyond the single picture. Piet Mondrian developed in its issues his doctrine of the equilibrium of vertical and horizontal. The picture was to be the model of a clarified world, from the painting to the chair to the house.

In Russia the same will to construction joined itself to the upheaval of the Revolution. Artists understood themselves as engineers of a new society and moved from the canvas to poster, book and stage. El Lissitzky shuttled between Moscow and the West as ambassador of these ideas and called his hovering pictorial constructions Proun; Laszlo Moholy-Nagy carried the constructive spirit to the Bauhaus and extended it to photography and the experiment with light.

The borders to the neighbouring movements remained permeable. Kurt Schwitters, really the head of Hanover Dada, worked closely with van Doesburg, Paul Klee taught side by side with Moholy-Nagy at the Bauhaus, and the Cologne painter Heinrich Hoerle tied construction back to the figure. What unites this art is less a form than an attitude: the picture is not a window but a blueprint.
