Robert Smirke (1753 - 1845) was born the son of an eccentric hiking painter. When he moved to London in the course of the work of his father at the age of 12 years, he went to the coachmalist Bromely in the apprenticeship. At age 20, he was eventually accepted for a degree at the Royal Academy Schools. Later, Smirke was first a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists, where he was allowed to exhibit his first works. He became a full member of the Royal Academy only in 1791, when he exhibited his works "The Widow" there. For his diploma thesis at the Academy in 1793 he submitted the work "Don Quixote and Sancho".

Smirke was highly esteemed at the Royal Academy and was proposed in 1804 as an Academy Keeper for the succession of Joseph Wilton. King George III. However, spoke against the appointment of Smirke. Because he disliked Smirkes openly expressed political attitude. The king feared that Smirke would pass on his revolutionary views to the young students. So Smirke was passed over in the election and Henry Fuseli got the job. Smirke exhibited for the last time in 1813 at the Royal Academy. The picture was titled "Childhood". In the following years until about 1834 he exhibited a few works outside the Academy.

Smirke mainly painted small-sized pictures, often in monochrome colors. Therefore, his works were well suited for engravings and were used by some engravers such as Joseph Goodyear or William Finding. Many of his paintings had a sentimental or humorous to satirical character. In addition to his diverse pictures, Robert Smirke also tried as an illustrator. He made illustrations for the Bible, but also for some international, literary classics, such as "The Arabian Nights" or "Don Quixote", which was translated by his daughter Mary Smirke. Robert Smirke had four sons and at least one daughter. Two of his sons, Robert and Sidney, became famous architects and also members of the Royal Academy. His son Richard became a notable antiquarian artist and his son Edward became a lawyer. © Meisterdrucke
