The artists around Paula Modersohn Becker painted in Worpswede mainly landscapes in the style of Naturalism. The young painter also made portraits and wanted to emphasize the essential characteristics of people. Thus she travelled to Paris several times and was inspired by the city. In an exhibition of Paul Gauguin Paula Modersohn Becker got to know a different way of painting. People and persons were depicted solely by means of colored surfaces and moreover without perspective representation.
In 1888 Paula, born in Dresden, moved with her family to Bremen. Paula took painting lessons and got to know the artists' colony in Worpswede. In 1901 she married the painter Otto Modersohn. Through the marriage she was able to continue her artistic work, but she did not feel comfortable in the small town. In 1906 she went to Paris and painted many self-portraits. Well-known is the painting "Liegende Mutter mit Kind II", summer 1906. Back in Worpswede the daughter Mathilde was born on November 2nd and on November 20th 1907 Paula Modersohn Becker died. She had painted almost 750 pictures and made even more drawings, which were only discovered after her death.
