The Russian painter Marianne von Werefkin was an outstanding figure of German Expressionism. She comes from a Russian noble family and was born on 29 August 1860 as Marianna Wladimirowna Werefkina in Tula. At an early age, her artistic talent is promoted, and as a fourteen-year-old she receives academic drawing lessons. In St. Petersburg she takes private lessons with Repin . In the hunt she accidentally shoots through her right hand. Through persistent practice, she manages to paint again with the right hand. She masters realistic painting so perfectly that it is called "Russian Rembrandt". In 1891 she met the painter Alexey von Jawlensky . Five years later, she moves with him to Munich.

In the Bavarian capital, she initiates a salon in which meets the bohemian Munich. In addition, she founds the Lukas Brotherhood, the nucleus of the "Neue Künstlervereinigung München" and the "Blaue Reiter". After the birth of the son, the crisis intensifies between Jawlensky and Marianne von Werefkin. With her son undertakes several trips to France. After she has started to paint again, she often works with Jawlensky, Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter in Murnau. Together with Jawlensky, Oscar Wittenstein and Adolf Erbslöh , she founds the "Neue Künstlervereinigung München", whose chairman soon becomes Kandinsky.

In 1907 Werefkin's first expressionist paintings were created, inspired by Vincent van Gogh , Paul Gauguin and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec . That brings her the epithet "The Frenchwoman". Motivated and iconic, she often leans towards the works of Edvard Munch . Werefkin and Jawlensky participated in 1913 with the group "Der Blaue Reiter" at an exhibition in the gallery "Der Sturm" in Berlin. Together with Jawlensky Werefkin moves in 1914 to Switzerland, where they land after several moves in Ascona. Jawlensky separates in 1921 from Werefkin. She earns her living by painting postcards and posters as well as writing articles, eg for the Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

The paintings of her late work are no longer so shocking. They become more subtle and narrative. Typical Russian features in the color scheme are now very clear. In February 1938 Werefkin dies in Ascona, where she is buried according to the Russian Orthodox rite. Her estate is mostly in the Fondazione Marianne Werefkin in Ascona. © Meisterdrucke
