The Russian Ilya Efimovich Repin was trained as an icon painter and in the course of his life became the most important representative of Russian realism. Repin already had contacts abroad during his studies and portrayed the Russian pacifist and writer Leo Tolstoy several times.

His most famous work "The Wolgatreidler" was created between 1872 and 1873.

Ilya Repin had traveled to the Volga several times to draw the trekkers whose job it was to raise freighters up the Volga. All persons shown were known by name. He had met each one of them and studied for a long time.

Repin showed "The Wolgatreidler" at the Vienna World Fair of 1873, where it was awarded a bronze medal and sustained its artistic fame. Repin was able to sell the painting for 3,000 rubles to the Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich and was from then on financially supported by the Petersburg Academy, so that he could devote himself entirely to painting.

Fyodor Dostoevsky wrote appreciatively about the picture in his "Diary of a Writer": "You have to love the defenseless people, you can not pass them without closing them in. When you look at the picture, you spontaneously feel obliged to to do something to these people, to work for them. "

Repin saw it as his task to show social ills, to criticize them and to provide for change. Until his death, the convinced vegetarian also committed to the abolition of the death penalty. © Meisterdrucke
