James John Wilson Carmichael was born in 1799 in Newcastle upon Tyne in northeastern England. His interest in seafaring may have been aroused by the fact that his father was a carpenter who specialized in the construction of ships. Carmichael followed in his father's footsteps and learned the same trade. Even at a relatively young age, he took to sea and spent several years on a transport ship in the region of Portugal and Spain. He then worked in Newcastle for the carpentry Farrington & Bros., which also worked in shipbuilding. Even then, Carmichael discovered his interest and talent for painting. And the Farringtons gave him his first paint box.

Carmichael was only 23 when he opened a studio in his hometown. In the same studio also worked the landscape painter Thomas Miles Richardson senior . Next door was a gallery, the Northern Academy of Arts, where Carmichael exhibited many of his paintings. He painted with oil and watercolor paints. His favorite subject: ships. Carmichael's paintings are characterized by their radiant radiance and amazing three-dimensionality. Proportionally dominates the sky, sometimes clear, sunny and friendly, sometimes threateningly overcast by a passing cloud band, or filled with powder dust exploding cannon fire. Proud frigates with sails fluttering in the wind lie peacefully at anchor in bays and drift on calm waters, then defy dark crushers and thunderous storms. Or they fight each other. In the background often rises a hill, on which stands an imposing structure, a fortress or a lighthouse, veiled by a light haze.

But also landscapes off the coast have done to Carmichael: idyllic village streets, wooded parks, viaducts and bridges, cathedrals and urban panoramas. Finally, he also painted the nave of St. Peter's Church in his hometown of Newcastle, lit by sunlight from the windows. One almost believes that one finds oneself in oneself, the scenery looks so real and vivid. Carmichael took inspiration on long journeys through Italy and Holland, where he also painted merchant ships in harbors and offshore. In 1847 he moved from Newcastle to London and from then on exhibited his paintings in important galleries, such as the "Royal Academy" and the artists' association "Society of British Artists". His studio was in London's Chelsea, a neighborhood that was home to many Victorian painters, including JMW Turner .

Carmichael worked for the Illustrated London News, an English weekly magazine of that time. In 1954 he was sent to the Baltic Sea area to paint scenes from the Crimean War. But Carmichael also captured more pleasant moments in his pictures. So he presented impressively a maritime scene in which the British explorer James Clark Ross undertook an expedition in the Antarctic. At the age of almost 70 years Carmichael went permanently to Scarborough not far from Newcastle, where he spent his old age and finally died in 1868. His paintings can be admired in various galleries in London and Newcastle. © Meisterdrucke
