English School refers to the art that was created in the period between 1750 and 1850 by artists from the England region of origin. One recognizes the painting style that was modern at the time as well as the predominant pictorial themes.
Nevertheless, the works of the English School are as diverse as their artists and thus very versatile and extremely interesting. They show plans, animals, everyday scenes, cities, portraits, landscape painting, detail drawings, comics and much more. The techniques are as different as the motifs: from engravings to pencil drawings and oil paintings, almost everything is included.

William Turner (1775-1851) was part of the English School and his works, spanning several decades, show the development of the painting style and the influences on the style. Other well-known personalities of the English School include the artists Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) and Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792). She and many other English artists contribute to the versatility of the English School and thus also determine the style of this era.

The term English School, unlike in French or Spanish, is not translated into German. In Europe, one also speaks of academic art or academism. © Meisterdrucke
