The overwhelming success as a painter was not necessarily laid in the cradle of Carl Blechen: his parents had nothing to do with art or painting at all. His father was a tax collector and the family lived in modest circumstances. Carl Blechen was born in 1798 in Berlin. During his time at the Gymnasium he had lessons with the well-known painter Ch. G. Lemmrich, who recognized his potential. Unfortunately, Blechen's parents did not have the means to study their son, so he began an apprenticeship as a banker and also worked in this profession. On the side, however, he always devoted himself to painting. After all, at the age of 24 he finally took up studies at the Berlin Academy of the Arts. After graduating, he got a permanent job as a decorative painter at the Royal City Theater in Berlin, which he lost, however, by personal quarrels again. He started his own business as a freelance artist and toured the Baltic coast and above all Italy. He brought over 500 sketches home, after which he created his pictures.

He became aware of him and at the age of 33 he was appointed Professor of Landscape Painting at the Berlin Academy. He continued to travel, painting and teaching, but his health was becoming increasingly obvious. He had severe mental health problems and suffered from recurrent depression. Finally, he was on leave from the Academy. His last trip took him to Dresden and from there comes his last drawing. His health did not recover. He died on July 23, 1840 in mental derangement.

Our idea of romanticism in painting is shaped by Caspar David Friedrich and includes wild-romantic landscapes, dramatic moods, gnarled trees and weathered castles. All of these ingredients are also found in Carl Blechen, but unlike the early Romantics, he created no fabulous or heroic scenes. His landscapes reflect reality, are more drastic and at the same time sober. In his light and color effects, he achieves moods that are already reminiscent of the Impressionists. This way of depicting nature was quite controversial at the time, but his work was groundbreaking. © Meisterdrucke
