Orientalism

When Napoleon landed in Egypt in 1798, more than a hundred scholars and draughtsmen travelled in his train, and their large-format illustrated volumes, above all the monumental Description de l'Égypte from 1809, supplied Europe with images of temples, bazaars and deserts. The campaign failed, the hunger for images remained. Yet the curiosity about the East was older: from 1699 Jean Baptiste Vanmour had painted audiences and costumes of the Ottoman court in Constantinople.

The nineteenth century made of it a field of its own. David Roberts travelled through Egypt and the Holy Land in 1838/39 and published his views from 1842 in great lithographed plate volumes. John Frederick Lewis lived for a decade in Cairo and afterwards painted bazaars and courtyards of jewel-like precision, Gustave Bauernfeind moved entirely to Jerusalem at the end of his life. The American Edwin Lord Weeks stretched the field as far as Persia and India. Alongside observation stood projection from the beginning. Ludwig Deutsch produced his minutely detailed Oriental scenes mostly in his Paris studio; Étienne Dinet, by contrast, learned Arabic, settled in Bou Saada in Algeria and converted to Islam in 1913. Between these two poles the whole genre moves.
