Robert George Talbot Kelly was a well-known British painter, author and illustrator. He was the son of the Irish landscape painter Robert George Kelly. After finishing school, he started working in 1876 in a cotton trading company.
In his spare time, Kelly is engaged in art. His father taught him painting and drawing techniques from which he will benefit later. His early works appeared under the name R. G. Kelly Junior, his later works under his full name. Around 1880 Robert George Talbot Kelly went on a Mediterranean cruise. He collected his impressions of the journey and made sketches. This inspiration awakened his desire to change his career. In 1882 he quit his job with his employer to devote himself fully to his passion. But that was not all. He left his home country and set out on a journey to Egypt. There he rented his own studio. Relatively quickly he learned the Arabic language. So he could travel the whole country without any problems and get to know the culture in all its facets. Robert George Talbot Kelly recorded his impressions of the landscape, the country and the people in his notes and drawings. In his studio he made paintings based on the sketches of his collected impressions. Works with motives from the cities of Egypt and the desert landscape were created. He had a special relationship with the Bedouins. He spent a long time with the nomadic desert people of Egypt. Not only in his works of art, but also in his books he described his impressions from this eventful time. In terms of art history, Robert George Talbot Kelly's works are characteristic of the style of Orientalism.
The successful artist had to leave his adopted country in 1915 for health reasons. He went back to London, where he created further works of art. During his artistic career, Kelly produced numerous illustrations for books in addition to paintings, including Rudolf Slatin's title "Fire and Sword in Sudan". In his own books, the Briton describes his impressions from his time in Egypt. In 1902 he published a general book about the country, later other books with reports of his trip to Burma. His son also discovered his talent for art. Richard Talbot Kelly (1896-1971) was a talented landscape painter who also dealt with historical themes in his art. During his lifetime Robert George Talbot Kelly exhibited his works of art regularly. He not only influenced the art scene in his home country England. He also influenced art and culture in Egypt and Burma, where he lived for a time. Robert George Talbot Kelly died in London in 1934.
