Konstantin Andreyevich Somov - “The Boxer”

Somov’s ‘The Boxer’ bears no resemblance to a boisterous sporting scene. The figure appears more composed than combative, almost as if caught in a moment between poise and inner tension. It is precisely this restraint that suits Somov, who worked within the circle of the Russian artists’ group ‘Mir Iskusstva’ and frequently demonstrated a keen sense of pose, elegance and psychological nuances. His paintings are rarely concerned solely with the visible; they also capture something of the atmosphere that surrounds a figure.
The reproduction measures 48 × 57 cm and is executed on Leonardo (Satin) canvas. The satin-finished surface brings out the smooth transitions, the subtle tonal values and the clear definition of the figures in a balanced way. The motif is mounted on a stretcher frame and extended in a mirrored pattern along the sides, so that the edges of the picture appear seamless.
The classic “Lychorida” frame combines black with a hollow light brown and a delicate gold edge. Measuring 45 mm in width and 36 mm in height, it lends the portrait a warm, subdued depth. A notched hanging system completes the design.
