The famous double-slit experiment, seen in a different light. A reminder that long-known scientific correlations can always fascinate anew - if viewed in the right context.
A digital artwork from the Atoll of Diffraction series - art based on and inspired by physics.
Diffraction patterns are created on fictitious cylindrical screens - by two imaginary diffraction gratings (double slits) placed back to back in the centre of the structure.
These structures embody the intensity of the diffracted light of different wavelengths. A peak can be seen where a lot of light would reach. Each line uses exactly the colour corresponding to the diffracted wavelength, additionally weighted according to the intensity of the sun's blackbody radiation.
White light "decomposes" into the familiar spectral colours of the rainbow; however, the entire structure appears unfamiliar, more like a spaceship in outer space. The aesthetics of the everyday phenomenon are combined with the aesthetics of the underlying mathematical physics.
The Atoll of Diffraction attempts to combine science and art. Simple lines without thickness and depth are used deliberately: the memory of sober scientific illustrations is awakened. But the combination and superimposition of all these lines creates something new: chaos, unexpected patterns, artefacts.
