Wiilliam Blake was a poet, nature mystic and painter. Between 1790 and 1798 he wrote and painted with the help of his wife Catherine Blake the idea writing "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell". The work consists of 27 plates. The book is about the poet visiting hell. He imitates the revelation books, but reflects his own views. The title is an ironic allusion to "De Coelo et eius mirabilibus, et de inferno" (in English: heaven and hell) a theological text by Emanuel Swedenborgs, who is often quoted and criticized in Blake's work. Sigmund Freud and Carl Gustav Jung were also inspired by The Marriage of Heaven and Hell because it describes the struggle between a superego and an id.
