Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres is one of the most important painters in the history of French art. As one of the main representatives of classicism he created masterpieces in the genres portrait, history and nude painting. The central theme of his work is the female nude. In 1808 Ingres created "The Bathers of Valpincon", whose theme he varied 20 years later with "The Little Bather". Ingres took up the motif even in old age, among other things in his masterpiece "The Turkish Bath" from 1863. The woman in "The Grande Odaliske" is in appearance and attitude related to the many naked and half-naked bathers in Ingres work. Like them, she too turned her back on the viewer. Unlike the bathers, however, she looks self-confidently into the eyes of the viewer as if she knows about their effect. Even the artist Ingres wants to provoke why he emphasizes the beautiful naked body - through composition, color and lighting. © Meisterdrucke
