Symbolism  ·  Portraits

The French painter and illustrator Gaston Bussiére lived from 1862 to 1928. Some sources call the year of death 1929. The artist's period of work falls in the middle of one of the most fertile periods of French painting. His works are also influenced by the flow of symbolism as well as by the stylistic traits of the Impressionists. Like the symbolists, he found his motifs in legends and myths as well as the timeless works of world literature. Similar to the important impressionists, his brushwork could sometimes be free and unfettered by the drawing. Bussiéres painting "Salammbô", painted in 1907, is one of the artist's major works. Formally, the image is influenced by Gustave Moreau, his loose, the brushstroke accentuating style reminiscent of Pierre-Auguste Renoir. His theme was Bussiére in the famous novel of the same name by the French writer Gustave Flaubert. The book, which dates back to the third century BC, revolves around Salammbô, the fictitious daughter of the historic Carthaginian statesman and commander of Hamilcar Barka.
