The painter Ferdinand Hodler was one of the co-founders of the art form of parallelism. In the landscapes of Switzerland, the artist found natural specifications that corresponded to his sense of parallel patterns. "The artist's mission is to express the eternal element of nature, beauty, and its essential beauty," Hodler said of his art. Ferdinand Hodler searched for elements of order, structures and laws of nature. He found them in a familiar environment near Geneva. Lake Thun, surrounded by the ridges of the Stockhorn Range, was one of the artist's favorite motifs. At a young age, Hodler became acquainted with the region, which in later years became familiar to the artist. Layered, the observer sees the individual elements of shore, lake, mountain range and sky. The arrangement is underlined by dividing lines between the individual elements of the landscape. The painter made series of this motif, which changed in his paintings and formed again and again. The selected motif shows a reflection of the mountain range on the surface of the lake. On the outer sides are almost elliptical conclusions, with which the artist deviates somewhat from his view of the order in nature. The symmetry of the work is remarkable. The summit of Stockhornberg forms with its reflection the central axis. The opposite bank with the mountains creates a vertical axis. The landscape painting is dominated by a cool color scheme, yet Ferdinand Hodler has chosen a warm brown for the lower mountain regions, which finds itself as a reflex in the reflection.
