Constructivism, De Stijl

Constructivism emerged at the beginning of the 20th century. The first artists of the era came from Russia and the later Soviet Union. Characteristic of Constructivism is the renunciation of the representation of natural motifs such as animals or people. Likewise, landscapes do not appear in the paintings of the painters of the style. Instead, geometric forms such as lines or areas of color are used as a means of expression. Thus, non-objectivity is the common denominator of constructivism. A well-known representative of the style is the Russian painter Kasimir Malevich, who lived from 1878 to 1935. Especially his painting "Black Square" is counted among the most important works of the art movement. It exists in several variations and is exhibited today in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, among other places. The work contains as a motif only a black square surrounded by a white border.

A popular trend of constructivism is also the artist group De Stijl, which was formed in the Netherlands in 1917. The artists also committed themselves to a departure from the representational technique of previous art movements and relied instead on an abstract formal aesthetic. They also used only a few primary colors such as red and blue. A significant artist of the artist association De Stijl is Piet Mondrian. The Dutch painter created, among other things, the famous painting "Broadway Boogie Woogie", which is housed in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
