There are frames that cannot be explained straight away, but which you simply want to hold in your hands first. Moni is one such frame. In a Cornice workshop in Milan, they would probably have simply placed it on the table without a word and waited for the light to do its work. The moulding is robustly constructed, measuring 71 mm in width and 31 mm in height. Its cross-section reveals a soft heartwood core covered with an olive wood veneer, darkly stained in a shade ranging from blackish-green to olive-green. The visible side rises slightly from the rebate towards the outside and then breaks off flat at the outer edge. This rising panel shape is familiar from the tradition of the Italian ‘cassetta’, the box frames used to mount panel paintings since the Renaissance: The sloping surface draws the eye inwards, rather than holding it at the edge. Matt, open-pored, with fine cracks and grain patterns that appear brownish when viewed in raking light. From a distance, the frame appears almost black; up close, it looks green and vibrant. We recommend it for still lifes by the Old Masters or for contemporary black-and-white photography. It looks its best when the picture itself is rather subdued.
