| The Mervi picture frame combines surfaces with an antique white patina with subtly shimmering silver. A rhythmic leaf motif runs around the picture on the 30 mm wide profile. The raised, silver-coloured sections catch the light from the sides in specific places, whilst the recesses and irregular patina remain soft and matt. This creates not a solid, glossy edge, but a lively interplay that complements the particularly subtle tonal gradations in photographs. The 19 mm high profile, made of solid wood, is clearly tiered: a narrow outer edge frames the ornamented central panel, whilst on the inside a raised silver strip leads the eye to the motif. This tiered design draws the eye and lends the print a sense of spatial depth without requiring a wide frame. The continuous leaf motif is reminiscent of classical palmette friezes. Since the late 18th century, such repeated plant ornaments have served to frame portraits, prints and smaller image formats in an orderly manner. We are happy to recommend Mervi for black-and-white portraits with soft grey tones or for atmospheric architectural photographs as a pigment print. It looks at its best when the photograph has a sense of calm and features clear, uncluttered areas. In large formats, the narrow, decorative outline acts as a delicate, light-reflecting border. |
