Painting Frames "Lolanthe" |

| Lolanthe – the find with a green-gold sheen. It’s easy to imagine this frame turning up in an attic, covered in a layer of dust, and suddenly beginning to gleam the moment you wipe it clean. Lolanthe is 30 mm wide and 23 mm high; the profile rises gently from the visible edge and slopes down towards the inner edge in a soft cove moulding towards the picture. This sloping cove is the real trick: it draws the eye inwards like a small ramp, rather than holding it at the edge. Such simple moulded profiles are familiar from 19th-century rural workshops, where moulded and colour-painted strips replaced the expensive carved gold frames found in towns. The surface is finely grooved, a dense interplay of lines running across the profile. Over this lies a light green-gold patina with dark speckles, and gold glints through at the edges. In oblique light, the shimmer dances across the grooves and appears alive, almost like old window glass. We are happy to recommend it for floral still lifes, botanical drawings or light-coloured watercolours. It looks at its best when the picture itself features calm, warm tones. |
