Painting Frames "Isabelle" |

| ‘Isabelle’ in grey-blue and silver is one of those frames that makes us want to pause for a moment and turn the frame towards the light. The profile is 30 mm wide and 23 mm high: a slightly rising, gently curved moulding that slopes down from the outer edge towards the edge of the picture, where it merges into the rebate with a fine, darker-contrasting edge. This inward-sloping moulding is the classic basic form of the picture frame, as it has been made since the 17th century – it draws the eye into the picture like a funnel, rather than holding it at the edge. In this slender, unadorned design, it is reminiscent of the simple cabinet frames in which small landscapes and studies were once framed. The surface is finely grooved, with dense lines running across the moulding, over which lies a silvery sheen. In the light, the colour shifts between cool grey-blue, pale turquoise and a light ochre; the brushed finish ensures it never looks flat. The cross-section reveals solid wood. We recommend it for atmospheric coastal landscapes and delicate watercolours. It looks its best when the picture itself features light, cool tones. |
