Isabella combines a solid wood base with a clearly structured, two-tone surface. The narrow strip is 20 mm wide and 25 mm high. This gives it a understated appearance when viewed from the front, whilst lending it a surprisingly striking depth when viewed from the side. The profile is structured like a small step: a slightly curved golden front edge rests above the black, linear base. A narrow strip in a lighter shade of gold extends towards the image. This layering makes the motif appear to step slightly forward, whilst the black background forms a calm outline. The design follows the tradition of minimalist stepped profiles, as were particularly used in the 20th century in graphic design, photography and modern painting. Here, it is the profile structure rather than ornamentation that creates the spatial effect. The golden surface is finely grooved lengthways and brushed. Small dark speckles break up the metallic sheen, so that the light is not reflected across the entire surface but travels in fine lines across the strip. Black provides a precise contrast to the warm gold. We are happy to recommend Isabella for minimalist architectural drawings or abstract works featuring black, ochre and off-white. In our experience, it looks its best when the artwork features clear planes or a calm composition.
