Painting Frames "Friederike" |

| Friederike is a solid wood frame moulding that provides a picture with a tangible sense of stability without overshadowing it with a bright sheen. At 49 mm wide and 25 mm high, it has a strong presence, yet its gently rising profile ensures it sits close to the wall. The wide ornamental zone curves gently outwards, whilst a narrow, recessed inner moulding guides the eye cleanly towards the picture. The relief features rows of leaf motifs and stylised acanthus forms. Such ornaments are in the tradition of Baroque frames, furniture and wall decorations. There, they served not only as decoration but also to create movement: the upright leaves break up long stretches and guide the eye towards the centre of the picture. In the case of ‘Friederike’, the smaller sequence of leaves along the inner edge fulfils this guiding function particularly beautifully. Dark copper, copper brown and bronze alternate across the raised areas. A dark patina lies in the recesses, with hints of greenish oxidation appearing in places. Side lighting makes the tips of the relief glow warmly, whilst the background remains calm and deep. We are happy to recommend Friederike for Baroque portraits or opulent floral still lifes. It looks at its best when the image features strong shadows, warm earth tones or muted shades of green. |
