| Cornelia – what sort of picture do you think a frame like this is made for We reckon: one that needs a bit of tranquillity but is still allowed to shine. The profile is 30 mm wide and 24 mm high, made of solid wood, with the cut edge revealing the continuous grain in all its glory. From the outside, a flat, slightly curved bevel rises towards the picture and then drops away into a narrow groove leading to the golden inner edge. This design – covered on the outside, with a light-coloured rib on the inside – is familiar from late 19th-century workshop frames: The recessed outer surface keeps the wall at a distance from the picture, whilst the light-coloured edge at the rebate gently draws the eye in, just as a passe-partout does, only narrower. The surface is two-tone: a blue-grey to anthracite-coloured cloud pattern at the top, with a warm old gold beneath, both brushed. In raking light, the brushing creates fine lines, and the gold alternates between a matt finish and a shimmering sheen depending on the time of day. We are happy to recommend it for atmospheric landscapes with cloudy skies or for tranquil still lifes. It looks at its best when the picture features muted, earthy tones. |
