Painting Frames "Clio" |

| Clio is one of those frames that we find ourselves lingering over for a moment longer. The 49 mm-wide profile rises from the picture in a gentle concave curve and tapers outwards into a slightly overhanging edge – a movement that draws the eye away from the wall and towards the picture. Ahead of this surface lies a densely arranged band of acanthus leaves in bold relief, accompanied on the inside by a finer leaf moulding, the sort used in Baroque ornamentation to mark the transitions between different zones. Such ornamental mouldings once framed paintings in castles and town houses, where they were intended to shimmer in candlelight. That is precisely what the surface still does today: the antique gold rests warmly on the ridges, whilst the dark, speckled patina remains in the recesses, lending depth to the relief. The cross-section reveals solid wood with a continuous grain. We recommend Clio for Old Masters, for portraits and dark still lifes, to which it lends a sense of weight. It looks at its best when the painting itself has calm areas and allows the ornamentation to take centre stage. |
