Berni is rather like a find from the loft, which we carefully dust off and then, because of its vibrant wood grain, suddenly find we can’t put down. Its wide moulding has a solid wood core and is finished with a real olive wood veneer. Brown, reddish-brown and dark brown patches drift across the surface like tranquil clouds. Small irregularities and varying grain patterns are a visible part of its rustic character. The 71 mm wide and 31 mm high profile has a clean, angular design. An extensive, almost flat visible surface gives the grain plenty of room to shine. It slopes gently towards the outer edge, whilst a narrow, dark inner edge frames the pattern precisely. This gives Berni a robust appearance without being overly ornate. The matt finish absorbs harsh reflections and, when viewed in side light, allows the wood to shift gently between warm brown and deep reddish-brown. With its wide, veneered surface, the frame is reminiscent of the simple furniture and picture frames of the Biedermeier period, when expressive woods accompanied portraits, prints and domestic landscapes. We particularly recommend Berni for atmospheric landscape paintings or understated portraits. It looks its best when the picture features warm earth tones or clear, calm areas of colour.
