The Naive painting finds its origin in the works of so-called amateur painters and is characterized by a particularly simple, reduced and imaginative representation of their motifs. Often the artist's pipe dreams and fantasies of a "perfect world" are depicted, with often unnatural proportions of the living beings and the environment and objects to each other. Moreover, Naive painting often does without shadows, so that an almost childishly "naive" interpretation of the motifs is perceived in the overall composition. Since the central perspective is often missing in the artworks, they are perceived as striking. However, depth effect is often achieved by the oblique juxtaposition of objects of various sizes.
Originated at the beginning of the 20th century, this art movement has produced well-known representatives who developed the style as self-taught artists. They came from simple, often bourgeois professions, such as Henri Rousseau (customs official), Louis Vivi (postal worker),Camille Bombois (circus athlete)or André Bauchant (gardener).
Naive painting achieved great notoriety through a traveling exhibition beginning in 1937 that transported and popularized this art form from Paris to Zurich to London and New York. In the post-war period, the art form developed a special popularity through artists from Serbia and a real art center for this style was formed in Serbian towns such as Kovacica and Jagodina. Kovacica is still considered a mecca for naive art with an international reputation and famous personalities such as Lady Diana and opera singer Montserrat Caballé bought works of art by artists from Kovacica.
