Laurenz Janscha

    June 30, 1749   -   April 1, 1812
Landscape painting   •   Wikipedia: Laurenz Janscha

Born on June 30, 1749 in the idyllic surroundings of Breznica in Upper Carniola, the life of Laurenz Janscha, a remarkable landscape painter, veduta artist and etcher, began. Janscha's humble beginnings, as the son of the farmer Matthias Janscha and Lucia Debellak, set him on an artistic path that led through the Academy of Engraving in Vienna. In the magnificent halls of this institution, he learned the intricacies of landscape drawing under the tutelage of Johann Christian Brand. Another mentor who shaped his path was Franz Edmund Weirotter.

Around the year 1780, Janscha began to expand his repertoire to include the technique of etching. Five years later, he found his calling working on the renowned "Collection de 50 vues de la ville de Vienne" published by Artaria in Vienna. Here Janscha provided watercolor models for seven mainly landscape prints, which are vividly reproduced in our art prints. However, it was the creation of vedute and views of the Vienna area, as well as other places, that established his name on the art scene. These works, often published as copper engravings or etchings, found a wide audience with various Viennese publishers. In 1797, Janscha succeeded Carl Philipp Schallhas as corrector at the class for landscape drawing at the Vienna Academy. A milestone in his career was his appointment as head of the master school after the death of Friedrich August Brand in 1806, and only five years later he was awarded the title of professor in recognition of his artistic mastery and contribution to the art world.

His private life was equally remarkable. In 1786, Janscha found a loving partner in Theresia Rindfleisch, the daughter of clock case maker Johann Michael Rindfleisch. Despite the challenges and setbacks that life presented him, Janscha drew a world that, seen through his eyes, was of unique beauty and complexity. This vision is vividly preserved in the high-quality art prints we make of his work. Through his art and our efforts to reproduce it in the highest quality, Janscha's unique talent and passion for landscape painting lives on today.
