In particular, his sense of color and a good eye for contours made the British John Hoppner one of the most popular portrait painters of his time. As the son of a German-born chamberlain of Queen Charlotte, he grew up directly at the English royal court. His great interest in art and, above all, painting did not remain hidden from the then reigning King George III, who then promoted him and enabled him to study at the Royal Academy of Arts. John Hoppner opened a few doors to this unusual career, helping him later to portray the leading English heads. However, before he caused a sensation as a portrait painter of higher English society, he had devoted himself to landscape painting, which he soon put aside in favor of more lucrative and prestigious portraiture.

Due to his highly respected achievements, he received several awards from the Royal Academy of Arts and then got the opportunity to exhibit in the rooms of his works. He also used this very intensively and presented in the Academy until his death in 1810 in about 160 different images. As a result, John Hoppner was also increasingly used for the production of portraits of the royal family, which is why the soon followed the famous Joshua Reynolds as an official court painter. Although he held this exposed position, he stood life-time with the also very popular portrait painter Sir Thomas Lawrence in a kind of rivalry. His influence at the royal court, however, was quite large due to his very coherent portraits, which often portrayed the portrayals very favorably. This becomes apparent, for example, in that despite criticizing his mother-in-law, the American sculptor Patience Wright, for the role of the Englishman in the American Revolutionary War, he was able to continue to fulfill his duties at the court.

Stylistically, the works of John Hoppner impressed by strong influences of the Venetian Renaissance and a very good understanding of anatomy, making his work very realistic and lifelike. He preferred to paint with oil paints on canvas, but also understood the art of lithography and engraving. Of his numerous portraits, which depict not only members of the royal family but also famous personalities of the time, such as Lord Nelson and Joseph Haydn, especially the portraits of women and children are remarkable, because they are very detailed and lively. According to the taste of his time, he presented his models mostly in posh and representative poses dar. The special feature of his painting is the fact that he always put the charisma of the portrayed persons in the foreground, whereby his works have their own character. His artistic talent has also been transferred to his son Richard Belgrave Hoppner, who was a highly respected painter of maritime motifs. © Meisterdrucke
