John Fulleylove

    18th of August 1845   -   May 22, 1908
Landscape painting   •   Wikipedia: John Fulleylove

The British artist John Fulleylove was born on August 18, 1845 in Leicester, United Kingdom of Great Britain. He grew up in Leicester in the East Midlands and was a trained architect. Already by profession he came to graphic drawing and eventually became a landscape painter.

Fulleylove was mainly occupied with oil and watercolour painting. In his early creative period he also worked as an illustrator for a London weekly magazine.
From the 1870s onwards, he achieved great popularity and presented his works at exhibitions throughout Great Britain as early as 1875. John Fulleylove was a passionate traveller and subsequently captured his impressions on canvas. This resulted in paintings of profane and sacred buildings and gardens in Rome, Florence and Athens. His paintings of landscapes in the Middle East and the Holy Land were particularly popular, but he also painted many views of towns, villages and historic buildings in his native England. Fulleylove is one of the most prolific painters of his time. Many of his paintings were already published in extensive publications and travel books during the Victorian Age. Today, the painter's works can be found in renowned houses such as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Art Galleries of Liverpool.

John Fulleylove was married to the artist Elizabeth Elgood. His brother-in-law George Samuel Elgood had also devoted himself to garden painting. His daughter Joan Fulleylove (1886 - 1947) later became famous as a glass painter. Among other things she created stained glass windows for the Anglican Cathedral in Khartoum/Egypt and joined the women's rights movement at an early age.
His son Christopher Fulleylove (1887 - 1954) also made a name for himself as an artist.

John Fulleylove died on 22 May 1908 in the Hampstead district of London. He is buried at Highgate Cemetery.
