John Collier (1850 - 1934) was a painter of pre-raphaelism and one of the leading portraitists of his time. Collier's family was politically and artistically highly regarded. Collier's education was very diverse. He first studied at the Eton School, but also went to Munich, Heidelberg, Paris and the Slade School. His teachers included Edward Poynter and Jean-Paul Laurens . Although he was not officially their student, Collier was also influenced by Lawrence Alma-Tadema and John Everett Millais . From Millais, Collier got used to his somewhat unusual-looking portrait practice. To do this, he placed canvas and model next to each other, took a few steps back, observed both from a distance, then returned to the canvas and continued to paint.

Collier made a name for himself as a portrait painter, although he also painted other motifs such as landscape scenes, historical and dramatic motifs. Many sought-after personalities of his time were willing to model him, which he could cover an impressive range of very different personalities. Among them were Charles Darwin, the admiral and polar explorer Edward Augustus Inglefield. But also spiritual, noble, artistic and political personalities let himself be portrayed by him. Collier's famous Sitter Book, which was in the possession of his son, was elaborately copied in 1962 and can be viewed publicly today. It is an exact handwritten listing of all portraits that Collier ever made with date, name of the model and many other interesting details. Overall, Collier was allowed to exhibit 83 times at the Royal Academy in London and more than 100 times at various other prestigious galleries. He was also one of the 24 founding members of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and also became its vice president.

Collier married Marian Huxley, who was a painter as well as a student at Slade School. Marian Huxley's father was President of the Royal Society between 1883 and 1885. Collier had close ties to the Huxley family not only because of his marriage to Marian. He was also close friends with his brother-in-law, the writer Leonard Huxley. After Marian died of pneumonia, Collier married his wife's younger sister. However, as this marriage contradicted the marriage law of England, the couple had to move to Norway for the marriage. © Meisterdrucke
