The mid-19th century brought the great change for Paris. Gone are the days of narrow and dark streets. Disappeared the filth and the morass that shaped the cityscape and let the fine company dwell in their noble salons. The boulevards were widened and expanded. Baron Hausmann shaped the cityscape of the metropolis so forward-looking that until today little has changed. The new streets were great for strolling and the members of society did not ask for long. Fashionably dressed in the afternoon, they walked the modern streets and saw and was seen. The streets became the scene of the magnificent stagings. Jean Béraud mingled with the illustrious society. Jean is a charming gentleman and it is easy for him to go under the cultivated walkers and capture the scenes of Parisian everyday life and to experience in his most productive period. Béraud documented everyday life in the era of the Belle Époque on the city's boulevards.

Many Impressionists left the city in these times and preferred the quiet surroundings for their art studies. Béraud loved the vibrancy between the Champs-Elysées, Montmartre and the long banks of the Seine. Together with Édouard Manet and Edgar Degas , an artist community formed, which gave each other inspiration and inspiration. So Béraud moved away from the representation of the self-actors and captured everyday scenes. Children who left school and women who fought against the wind, every contemporary theme became important. To capture exactly these scenes authentically, the painter set up a studio in a taxi. Hidden behind a curtain to protect against prying eyes. The canvas in the front seat and the color palette next to the painter in the back seat. Jean wanted to capture his characters in an unsuspecting moment, without posing and coquetry. An unconventional method, but precisely with these works Béraud achieved the greatest fame, without having to overcome his own modesty and timidity.

The Belle Époque represents an era in which art has undergone great change. The Art Nouveau started and theaters and metro stations showed a modern face. The world exhibition clearly showed the position that Paris took for art and culture. All Paris vibrated with joy. Interestingly enough, Béraud had decided to devote himself to religious painting. Béraud composed religious figures with a contemporary environment. The controversial paintings were not seen without criticism in art circles, bringing the artist an unprecedented popularity in society. © Meisterdrucke
