Edward Angelo Goodall

Nonclassified artists   •   Wikipedia: Edward Angelo Goodall

Edward Angelo Goodall comes from a family of artists. His father Edward Goodall was a famous engraver, who became famous especially because he engraved works by Turner. His younger brother Frederick Goodall was a painter, as were his younger brother Walter Goodall and sister Eliza Goodall. The young Edward Angelo Goodall received his education from his father. Already at a young age he had various exhibitions at the Society of Arts and the Royal Watercolor Society.

In 1840 a German-British expedition led by the Prussian botanist Richard Schomburgk undertook an expedition to British Guiana and Brazil. They were to make explorations and map the area. On this expedition Robert Schomburgk, the brother of the expedition leader, joined the expedition as expedition painter. But he and another member of the expedition fell ill with yellow fever and had to travel back home. Edward Angelo Goodall got the chance to replace him as a substitute painter and accepted it with great pleasure. During the expedition he made sketches and watercolours of the topography of the region, landscapes, flora and fauna. There are many pictures of exotic animals and plants, which were completely unknown in Europe at that time. But the artist also painted the indigenous population in the primeval forests of Guyana, including ethnic groups that have unfortunately become extinct. He also kept a very interesting diary about the course of the expedition. This diary and his pictures and sketches of the journey are now in the British Library.

Ten years later, a British magazine commissioned Goodall to accompany the Crimean War as a war artist. He witnessed the siege of Sevastopol and the battles of Alma and Balaclava and recorded the events. After the end of the Crimean War, the artist undertook many private journeys. He visited France, Spain, Portugal and Gibraltar. He also often travelled to Italy, which he loved very much, and he visited Venice fifteen times. In 1870 he undertook a trip to Egypt and Morocco together with his brother Frederick. During this trip he created his very famous watercolors "Near the Pyramid of Sakkara" and "Inside the Sultan Hassan Mosque Cairo". Some of his sketchbooks from this period are also on display in the British Library. Edward Angelo Goodall was 89 years old. His grave is in Highgate Cemetery in London.
