Biedermeier   •   Carl Spitzweg @ Wikipedia

Anyone who thinks about the time of Biedermeier and the time immediately after, almost inevitably, pictures of the Upper Bavarian painter and draftsman Carl Spitzweg (1808 - 1885) rise before his spiritual eye. Paintings such as "Sonntagsspaziergang" (1841) or "Auf der Bastei" (c. 1856) as well as Spitzweg drawings in the humor magazine "Fliegende Blätter" are among the most popular illustrations of the superficially idyllic and cheerful decades around 1848.

Spitzweg was a trained pharmacist. His passion was not pills and ointments, but from his youth pen and brush. Spitzweg's almost two thousand complete works are, for the most part, attributed to late romanticism. Typical for Spitzweg often small-town alley-angle worlds lovingly quirky depicting work and also typical of Spitzweg political attitude was the often social criticism transporting ambiguity of his paintings. Probably because of this cunning, for example, in his possibly most famous painting " The Poor Poet " (1839) hidden ambiguity, the contemporary cultural scene was the artist mainly skeptical. © Meisterdrucke
