The former student of Rubens became famous in England as a court painter. Previously, van Dyck had already been successful in Italy and Flanders. The portraits of Charles I of England and his family continued to dominate English portrait painting for many years to come.
The handsome Sir Anthony van Dyck owed Rubens a lot, because Rubens protected the young painter. Moreover, van Dyck profited from the fame of the respected artist in the form of lucrative commissions. In Antwerp, for example, van Dyck received commissions for altarpieces, and he also owed his money to the noble patrons of well-paid portraits.
Anthony van Dyck was born on 22 March 1599 in Antwerp. In 1615 he was already painting in his own workshop and helped Rubens until 1620 before he went to England. This was followed by trips to Italy, where he admired Titian and his works. Finally he returned to England in 1641. His daughter was born on 1 December, van Dyck died on 9 December 1641 and was buried on 11 December in St Paul's Cathedral in London. "Charles I hunting" and "Samson und Delia" are among the most famous paintings.
