Russian artist Aleksandr Yakovlevich Golovin was the creative mind behind many theater, ballet and opera productions in his homeland and was also known as a talented painter. Born in 1863, Golovin collaborated with high-profile Russian directors and dramaturges in addition to his work as a painter, draftsman and illustrator. He not only developed imposing sets for her plays, but was also happily engaged as a costume designer. Among other things, Golovin developed his innovative ideas and concepts for productions by Sergei Diaghilev, Constantin Stanislavski and Vsevolod Meyerhold. He also provided the set for the original production of Stravinsky's ballet "The Firebird" from 1910. For Pierre Beaumarchais' staging of the famous piece "The Marriage of Figaro" in the Moscow Art Theater Golovin was also active as a stage and costume designer.

Golovin was born in the city of Moscow. As a young man he first studied architecture. After mature deliberation, he later switched to the liberal study of painting. He received lessons both in his hometown and in Paris. After graduation, the young artist had to earn his living as a craftsman and decorator. Inspired by it, the creative Golovin tried out new artistic areas, such as designing furniture. At the Paris World's Fair in 1900, he was instrumental in designing the Russian Pavilion. He was showered with praise and received excellent reviews. A year later, Golovin moved from Moscow to the St. Petersburg region. Here he started his career as a stage designer for theater and opera pieces. He was able to react in a very modern way to the fashionable movement of the symbolists and to combine both in his works. His costume sketches spray with imagination. After the Russian revolution of 1917, the star of the theater scene ran into financial difficulties, as there were less and less performances in the theater and nobody could engage him. Therefore, the now 53-year-old decided to take a closer look at the painting he had given up for work in the theater. With graphic illustrations he was able to secure a new foothold, which benefited him economically.

Golovin is still considered one of the most important and influential stage sets of the former Russian Federation. The multifaceted artist influenced generations of international creative and cultural professionals. He died on 17 April 1930 at the age of 67 years in the city Detskoye Selo. © Meisterdrucke
