Flemish painting

Twice Flanders stood at the centre of European painting, and both times a metropolis set the pace. In the fifteenth century it was Bruges, where Jan van Eyck refined oil paint until fur, brocade and reflections became palpable. Robert Campin in Tournai developed the new closeness to reality in parallel, his pupil Rogier van der Weyden carried it to Brussels as city painter, and Hugo van der Goes exported it with the Portinari Altarpiece, which arrived in Florence in 1483, into the very Italy of the Renaissance.

The second high point came in the seventeenth century with Antwerp, which had its great trading age behind it, but whose large workshops supplied altarpieces, histories and cabinet pictures to courts and collectors across Europe. Beside the great names of the age stood specialists with fame of their own. David Teniers the Younger made the peasant tavern acceptable in polite society and, as gallery painter to Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, documented his picture collection. Jan van Kessel the Elder set insects and flowers on small copper panels with a naturalist's precision; with Joos de Momper the Flemish mountain landscape widened into panorama. Through both centuries runs the delight in the exactly rendered surface, from the fall of drapery to a beetle's wing.
