In this version, Pieter Brueghel the Younger’s “Proverbs” appears as a densely populated visual world full of small scenes and hidden meanings. Brueghel the Younger, son of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, frequently drew on his family’s pictorial tradition and preserved their delight in detail, in the observation of folk life, and in morally pointed pictorial narratives.

The motif is mounted on a stretcher frame and continues in a mirrored pattern at the sides, giving the edges of the picture a seamless appearance.
