Wassily Kandinsky - “Munich - The Isar”

Kandinsky’s “Munich - The Isar” does not yet display the complete abstraction for which he would later become famous. And yet much of it is already evident: the bold colours, the simplification of forms and the view of an urban landscape that is more a mood than a precise depiction. The Isar is not depicted in a matter-of-fact way here. Water, banks and architecture merge into a dynamic space of colour in which Munich appears almost like a memory. Kandinsky was already interested in what colour can evoke before it detaches itself entirely from the subject.
The reproduction measures 48 × 67 cm and is executed on Leonardo (satin) canvas. The satin-finished surface brings out the rich colours and the painterly transitions in a balanced way. The motif is mounted on a stretcher frame and continues in a mirrored pattern along the sides, so that the edges of the picture appear seamless.
The classic gold frame “Lena” , at 18 mm wide and 26 mm high, remains slim and frames the vibrant cityscape with a sense of calm. A pegged scalloped hanging system completes the design.
