Who would have thought that a small, inconspicuous watercolour box in the luggage of a German traveller would revolutionise the Peruvian art scene of the 19th century When Johann Moritz Rugendas, a painter from Augsburg, stopped off in Lima on his journey through South America, he not only attracted curious glances, but also inspired an entire generation of Peruvian artists to see the colours of their homeland with new eyes. Suddenly it was no longer just the majestic Andean landscape that was immortalised on canvases, but also the vibrant life of the markets, the bright traditional costumes of the Quechua women and the mysterious light dancing over the ruins of Machu Picchu.



Peru's art history is a kaleidoscope of colours, stories and identities - and it did not just begin with the arrival of European painters. Long before that, indigenous artists were already using natural pigments on textiles and paper to create impressive visual worlds that tell of myths, rituals and the close relationship with nature. However, the colonial era brought a new visual language to the country: the so-called "Cusco School" painters combined European oil painting techniques with local motifs, creating their very own, luminous iconography. Golden halos, lush floral ornaments and mysterious animal creatures merge in their paintings to create a visual world that still fascinates today. What is particularly fascinating is that many of these works were created anonymously, as the artists were regarded as craftsmen - and yet their handwriting is unmistakable.



A leap into the modern era shows how Peruvian art is constantly reinventing itself. While photographers such as Martín Chambi captured indigenous life in the Andes with a dignity and depth that is still moving today, painters such as Tilsa Tsuchiya experimented with surreal dreamscapes in which Peruvian myths and personal fantasies come together. Printmaking, once a tool of political enlightenment, became a means of expression for a new, self-confident identity by artists such as José Sabogal. And even today, in the studios of Lima and Cusco, works are created that interweave tradition and the present, light and shadow, reality and dream.
