Staten Island American painter Jasper Francis Cropsey is famous for his autumn paintings and architectural depictions. Cropsey was born in 1823, the eldest of eight siblings, first an architect. A passion that the later painter has endured throughout his life, as his painting "Starucca Viaduct" shows. Viewers and two people lying on a rock in the middle foreground of the picture look out onto the vast viaduct leading through the valley from an autumn landscape masterfully painted in color. A train roars over it, its vapor corresponding to the mighty clouds in the sky. This is reflected together with the huge massif in a small lake surrounded by flowering meadows with numerous trees. Here, the artist creates a dynamic landscape that invites you to marvel, walk and discover: while mountain, train and intense blue sky are brightly lit, the spectators are in the shade.
