"Landscape by moonlight" fascinates at first sight: The sky is wide open, the moon peeks over a band of clouds, the mighty wings of a mill tower like fingers into the air. The oil painting of the English landscape painter Pether unfolds its attraction through the clear division in the top and bottom. The earth, a path, a house, people in the distance are in the dark. Partly the moon illuminates paths and individual sections. Lit up, the landscape appears in the distance. This gives the painting an enormous perspective, which draws the view into the picture. In the distance, a lovely hilly landscape unfolds in the moonlight. Chimneys are visible and suggest a village in the valley. Or is it just a single house, located below the mill in the valley? This state of limbo makes the painting so appealing: the nocturnal scenery gives a hint of reality, but nothing is certain! As a viewer, one can stop in the distance like a walker and watch the natural spectacle. Or you visually start a journey on the winding path that leads below the mill in the direction of the valley. In the distance, a few people can be seen there. Her shadow is thrown on the wide path. It is equally possible to walk with the view towards the mill. Here a light is burning behind a closed window. The miller still seems to be awake. Using the color palette of earth tones, gray, white and dark green, the artist of the 19th century succeeds in creating an oil painting of considerable depth and complexity. While a dramatic spectacle takes place in the sky, there is silence below. The night unfolds thanks to the moon and the cloud formations a fascination that can not escape. This painting invites for viewing again and again. It is full of peace and at the same time very lively. A masterpiece of realistic landscape painting that can find a place in the living room as well as in the reading corner or the sleeping area.
