Erich Maria Remarque once said: "First, the military hospital shows what war is." Tonk's painting, in turn, shows the military hospital, at the end of the First World War, which is still symbolic of cruelty and utter devastation on the Franco-German front line Futility of every war stands. For four years, German and French troops fought each other in ditches, only to move the border by a few meters to the east or west. Millions died and in the end the commanders did what they could have done before, but only do so when there is no one left to die for them: sit down and talk. Nevertheless, it took just five years until one of the German commander-in-chief, Erich Ludendorff, pacted with Hitler, who in turn began the Second World War 21 years after the end of the first.
