The figure sits low on the ground, seen from above, as though the artist stood or knelt over her. The green blouse rests softly on her shoulder. Her stockings look almost black, worked with a grid-like pattern. Beside her, in a quiet stretch of paper, there is nothing at all. Charcoal pulls the outlines into place. In some spots the line barely breathes, in others it presses down hard, then breaks off, as though the pencil held its breath. Watercolour sits on top, and gouache beside it, thickening the white of the chemise beneath and giving the stockings their depth. The earlier sharpness of his hand has pulled inward. The slight fibre in the surface picks up the broken edges of the drawing without sharpening them. As an alternative, a matte photo paper works well too. It holds the gouache whites with a bit more snap and renders the grid pattern on the stockings with crisp clarity, while still keeping the quiet paper field around the figure free of shine.
