Caricatures, Comics

Hand-coloured etchings from London print shops made pictorial satire a business around 1790. James Gillray took aim at kings and ministers, later at Napoleon too, so sharply that his sheets sold edition after edition. The decisive push then came from lithography, for the planographic process was fast and cheap enough for the press, and with it caricature moved from the printseller's window into the newspaper.

In the nineteenth century Paris became the capital of this art, with satirical papers that risked censorship and prosecution. Grandville transformed people into animals and things and so became the forefather of fantastic illustration, Jean-Louis Forain kept up the pinpricks of the Paris press into the turn of the century. In London, Punch appeared from 1841; its long-serving house cartoonist John Tenniel created the illustrations for Alice in Wonderland (1865) on the side.

Out of pictorial satire grew the drawn narrative. From the 1880s Albert Robida devised illustrated visions of the future with airships and picture telephones, William Heath Robinson became proverbial in England for drawings of absurdly complicated machines. Both lines have their place here, political mockery and the narrative picture sequence; their heirs are the modern comics.
