Karin combines a narrow solid wood front with a significantly taller, dark-finished profiled body. Measuring 20 mm in width and 25 mm in height, the moulding has a subtle appearance, yet is deep enough at the sides to clearly set the artwork apart from the wall. The stepped rebate accommodates the picture board and frame, whilst the gently rounded front edge provides a smooth transition to the artwork. We find the two-tone finish particularly beautiful: dark gold and antique gold are interspersed with subtle rose gold tones. The lengthwise grooves and the brushed texture refract the light into narrow lines. This creates a subtle metallic sheen that shifts with the viewing angle without overshadowing the picture. The dark outer surface acts as a calm shadow edge and draws the eye inwards. With its clean, unadorned form, ‘Karin’ is reminiscent of the functional gallery profiles of the 20th century. Such narrow mouldings were used to precisely frame modern paintings and works on paper, rather than imposing a decorative narrative upon them. We are happy to recommend Karin for graphic works featuring warm red and ochre tones, or for abstract landscapes. It looks at its best when individual shades of gold, brown or rust in the subject matter establish a subtle connection with the surface.
