| This six-centimetre-wide wooden frame combines a calm presence with a pleasantly understated warmth. The solid wood has an anthracite-coloured finish through which fine, longitudinal streaks of warm brown shine through. This allows the material to remain palpable without the dark frame appearing heavy or closed off. In raking light, these lively lines stand out more clearly, whilst viewed head-on, the surface appears almost velvety and serene. We find the pronounced concave moulding particularly beautiful: from the narrow inner step, the profile curves gently outwards and ends in a delicately rounded edge. This concave shape gathers light in gentle gradations and guides the eye towards the picture like a gentle funnel. Concave profiles follow in the tradition of gallery frames, where wide, moulded mouldings gave paintings a sense of spatial depth without the need for ornamental decoration. The narrow inner spandrel creates a clear boundary with the artwork. We particularly recommend this frame for atmospheric landscapes by Caspar David Friedrich or for minimalist black-and-white photography. It looks its best when the subject features light areas or finely graded dark tones. We consider it a good choice for rooms where clean lines and natural materials set the tone. |
